What to Decide About Your Food Before You Book a Caterer
What to Decide About Your Food Before You Book a Caterer
Congratulations on your engagement. Choosing wedding catering in San Diego comes down to six decisions: your vision and theme, your menu, your guests' needs, your service style, your date, and your tasting. This guide walks through each one so you arrive at your first conversation knowing what to ask and what to expect.
At Kalei's Kitchenette, we planned our own wedding. We know how many decisions arrive at once, and we know that food is the one your guests remember most.

1. Your Wedding Vision and Theme
Every wedding conversation with us starts with one question: how do you envision your day? We ask about your theme, your style, and the feeling you want your guests to have.
Your answer shapes more than the menu. For couples with a Hawaiian style, or a theme that suits it, we sometimes provide floral decorations, leaves, and presentation touches that go with the buffet table, so the food looks like part of your design.
2. Your Hawaiian Fusion Wedding Menu
For Hawaiian wedding catering in San Diego, Kalei's Kitchenette serves Hawaiian fusion, a blend of Filipino-Hawaiian, Chinese, and Japanese influences. You can see that range across our catering menu. Guests often gravitate to Huli Huli Chicken, Kalua Pork, Garlic Chicken, and Kalbi Ribs, and our 65 pound lechon is a centerpiece for families who want one.
Decide which dishes matter to your family, and which ones your guests have never tried. We build around both.
3. Your Guests' Dietary Needs
Tell us how familiar your guests are with Hawaiian food, and whether anyone has dietary restrictions or allergies. Share allergies as early as you can, ideally during the discovery call, so we can plan around them. We offer vegetarian and vegan options as well.
4. Your Wedding Catering Service Style: Pick Up, Drop Off, or Full Buffet Service
We offer three ways to receive your wedding food:
- Pick up. Collect your order at our store.
- Drop off. We deliver, and Chef Andy helps arrange the food on your buffet table before he leaves.
- Full Buffet Service. One-sided buffet service with chafing dishes and sterno, food labels, serving utensils, tropical artificial centerpieces, and loose fresh orchids. Our team sets up and breaks down the buffet area, styles the presentation, keeps it clean throughout service, monitors food temperature, replenishes food as needed, and has an attendant available to serve portions on request. The delivery fee is waived.
Every wedding proposal is created for you after your discovery call, so it reflects your vision and nothing extra. Your guest count, your venue location, and the menu items you choose shape your total, which means you stay in control of the budget. Our team focuses on your food setup, service, and breakdown, and we will walk you through what to arrange for plates and cutlery with your venue or rental company so nothing gets missed.

We are glad to coordinate with the DJ, planner, rental company, and other vendors you have chosen. See our venues and vendors page for the teams we work with.
5. Your Wedding Date
We would love to be part of your day. We cater weddings Tuesday through Saturday, so share your date, or a few date options, on the Plan a Catering form and we will confirm availability. If you have been picturing a Sunday or Monday, tell us early and we will help you find a nearby date that works for you and your guests.
6. Your Wedding Food Tasting
A tasting is a great way to experience our cooking before you commit. Your tasting comes from our in-store menu, which includes several catering favorites such as Huli Huli Chicken, Teriyaki Beef, Pork Lumpia, and Kalua Pork, so you can taste the flavors your guests will enjoy. Ask us about arranging one when you submit your inquiry.

A Recent Wedding: About 100 Guests in Carlsbad
In August 2026, we provided full-service catering for a wedding of about 100 guests in Carlsbad. In a public Google review, the couple wrote that "Chef Andy handled everything from start to finish," which left them with one less major thing to worry about on a day with a thousand moving parts. They recommended the Huli Huli Chicken Teriyaki, Teriyaki Beef, and Pork Lumpia, and said guests were still talking about the food days later.
