Spreading Joy: Kalei's Kitchenette Teams Up with Toys for Tots to Brighten Children's Holidays

In the heart of San Diego, our community is coming together to make sure every child experiences a bit of holiday magic. This year, Kalei's Kitchenette is thrilled to partner with Toys for Tots, a cherished local charity that has been putting smiles on children's faces for decades.

A Personal Mission Close to Our Hearts

For the owners of Kalei's Kitchenette, this isn't just another charity effort—it's deeply personal. As parents of two young daughters, they know the pure joy that comes from unwrapping a special gift. The thought of any child waking up on Christmas morning without that excitement touches their hearts.

"Every child deserves to feel the magic of the holidays," says the owners Chef Andy and Khara. "When we think about kids in our community who might not receive a gift, it inspires us to do something meaningful."

What Is Toys for Tots?

Founded by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1947, Toys for Tots has grown from a small local initiative into a nationwide movement. Each year, it collects millions of toys to bring joy to children who might otherwise go without. The mission is simple but powerful: gather new, unwrapped toys and distribute them to less fortunate kids during the holiday season.

How You Can Make a Difference

We've set up a dedicated Toys for Tots collection point right here at Kalei's Kitchenette, turning our restaurant into a hub of community giving. We invite all San Diego residents to join us in spreading some holiday cheer:

  • Drop-off Location: 9926 Carmel Mountain Rd, San Diego, CA 92129

  • Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 11 am – 7 pm

  • Contact: 619-738-4731

Toy Donation Guidelines

We're excited to share that donations aren't limited to store-bought items! Our San Diego charity welcomes creative contributions:

Store-Bought Toy Ideas

  • Board games for various ages

  • LEGO sets

  • Art and craft supplies

  • Educational toys

  • Dolls and action figures

  • Sports equipment

  • Musical instruments

Homemade Toy Suggestions

  1. Hand-sewn stuffed animals

  2. Painted wooden blocks

  3. Custom-crafted board games

Please note that Toys for Tots prefers not to receive realistic-looking weapons or gifts containing food. This policy ensures all gifts are safe and appropriate for the children receiving them.

Beyond Toys: Building Community

Toys for Tots is more than a donation drive; it's a movement that brings people together. It teaches children about empathy, generosity, and the importance of giving back. By participating, you're not just giving a toy; you're helping to build a more compassionate community.

A Call to Action

This holiday season, we challenge our San Diego community to join Kalei's Kitchenette in making a difference. Whether you're a regular customer, a local business, or simply someone who believes in the power of kindness, your contribution matters.

Toys for Tots primarily supports children up to age 12, but in many communities, this extends to include teens up to 16 years old. When considering donations, think about what might bring joy to your own child or relative. For pre-teens and teens, consider items like sporting equipment, backpacks, cosmetics, wallets, bath gift sets, board games, remote-controlled cars, handheld electronics, skateboards and helmets, or hair care items like curling irons and straighteners.

You're Invited!

We warmly invite you to stop by Kalei's Kitchenette, drop off a toy, and be part of something truly special this holiday season. Together, we can ensure that no child in San Diego misses out on the magic of the holidays.

Let's make this holiday season brighter, one toy at a time.
