August 8, 2024, marks one year since the devastating Maui fire. As we reflect on this past year, we are reminded of the incredible journey of support and community spirit that has carried us through.
In 2023, during our donation drive for Maui, we met Neeko David. A customer at the time, Neeko learned about our efforts and was inspired to help. Growing up on the island of Guam, Neeko felt a deep connection to his fellow islanders in Maui. Neeko, a talented designer, volunteered to create a t-shirt design that embodied our vision. After collaborating, we chose the Yin Yang design, symbolizing balance and harmony, which resonated deeply with our mission.
Our Efforts in 2023
In the immediate aftermath of the fire, we launched a donation campaign to gather non-perishable items for those affected. The response was overwhelming, demonstrating the community's love and support for Maui. However, logistical challenges such as a backlog at the shipping barge and inundation of donations at the Maui airport forced us to pause the campaign after just two days. Despite these hurdles, the support from San Diego shone through. We are grateful for the media's role in raising awareness, as seen in the feature on Fox 5 San Diego. We continue to encourage donations to Maui United Way and urge visitors to support Maui by traveling to the island and bringing aloha with them.
On October 7th, we partnered with Global Art San Diego for a special event filled with creativity and compassion. Kids enjoyed a free art session, creating artworks to be sent to Maui. While the little ones created, parents enjoyed light snacks provided by us. Beyond art, we aimed to raise funds for three families we "adopted" during these challenging times. Contributions, whether monetary or in-kind, brought hope and stability to these families.
During the holiday season, we partnered with San Diego Loves Maui initiative with a two-day Toy Collection Drive on December 2nd and 3rd. We collected new and unwrapped toys and gift cards to support Lahaina's wildfire survivors. The community's generosity turned holiday wishes into reality, making the season unforgettable for our neighbors in need.
First year of recovery since the fire initiative
The Boys and Girls Club of Maui is the main beneficiary of our t-shirt campaign, running until September 8, 2024. This organization provides a second home for Maui's keiki (kids), offering a safe and positive environment during the critical hours when school is out. The Clubhouses are more than just a daycare or study hall; they are places where respect and youth development thrive.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui never take a single approach to help kids succeed. It takes caring mentors, safe spaces, and innovative programs designed to empower youth to excel in school and lead healthy, productive lives. They do whatever it takes to ensure all kids have a great future. From character and leadership programs to health and wellness, arts, sports, and education, their comprehensive approach supports the diverse needs of Maui's youth.
The impact of the Boys & Girls Club of Maui is profound. They promote social and emotional development through evidence-based activities, teaching youth the skills they need to cope with adversities such as housing and food insecurities, peer pressure, and lack of supervision. Your support through our t-shirt campaign will directly benefit these programs, helping Maui's youth navigate their challenges and build better futures.
