In March 2025, during Women’s History Month, our founder Khara Mangiduyos was honored as a 2025 Woman of Distinction by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria.
This city wide recognition celebrates women who have made a lasting impact on their communities—and we couldn’t be prouder to see Khara among them.

While many know Khara as the warm, welcoming force behind Kalei’s Kitchenette, her vision for the restaurant has always gone beyond the plate.
She’s used Kalei’s as a platform to foster connection, uplift local causes, and celebrate cultural heritage in Rancho Peñasquitos.
A Look at Khara’s Community Impact

Toys for Tots Holiday Drive | December 2023
In the spirit of the holidays, Khara led a collaboration with Toys for Tots to collect new, unwrapped toys for local children in need.
Kalei’s Kitchenette became a collection point, turning customers into contributors. The initiative brought neighbors together through shared generosity, helping to make the season brighter for families across San Diego.

Maui Wildfire Relief | August 2023
Following the devastating wildfires in Maui, Khara organized a community-driven relief effort. She coordinated supply donations, hosted fundraising nights, and partnered with local organizations to provide direct support to those affected. It was a heartfelt call to action—and our community showed up.
One-Year Anniversary Cultural Festival | January 2024
To mark one year since Kalei’s Kitchenette opened its doors, Khara hosted a cultural festival celebrating Hawaiian heritage. With live music, hula performances, and traditional dishes, the event honored the roots that inspire our menu and connected the broader community to island traditions.
A Humble Reflection

Khara never expected public recognition for her efforts—and that’s exactly what made this moment so meaningful. “This recognition came as a complete surprise,” she said. “Our home, school, church—even the grocery store—are all in a small radius. We just wanted our girls to grow up in a community where they’d see familiar faces and feel that sense of belonging.”
Her leadership happens quietly, behind the scenes—but its impact is deeply felt. Being honored during Women’s History Month made the recognition even more powerful, highlighting the influence of women who serve not for applause, but for purpose.

A Tribute to Purpose-Driven Service
As we celebrate this well-deserved recognition, we’re reminded that true leadership is rooted in love, service, and a deep sense of kuleana (responsibility). Khara’s journey is a testament to the power of community and the quiet strength of women who lead with heart.
Mahalo for being part of this story—we’re honored to share it with you.
